Digital Dozen Does: BLUE - Ruffles

Hi Goddesses

Yes I am obsessed, and nooooo, I am not going to apologise :)  This is my 3rd ruffle mani in as many weeks.  I love them!

As you know, I am a self-declared Splodger, so I tend to like nail art that's not too exact.  Now, whilst a ruffle is more exact than say .... a splatter ... there's still something sufficiently random about this to appeal to my inner child.

For those of you who like the science, let me lay down a few guidelines for you -
* always use a base colour first, ideally using the palest colour in your ruffle.  When I did the rainbow ruffle, I used a nude, as I didn't think any of the other colours were safe enough (they'd have distorted what I dotted on top)
* think about the order of your colours - are you going from light to dark, or random
* think about which size dotting tool to use.  You want to go fairly large, to get the appearance of dots.  I have large nails and I used the next to largest size

* try to make your dots look separate - it creates a better effect.  Where mine are too close together, it just looks like I did a lumpy line
* pick your first colour, and do all your nails in that colour first.  Then stop.
* be patient - you're going to have to wait til that first colour is dry before you can do your next row.  Again, do all 5 nails.  Then stop

So, which colours did I use this time ?
OPI Ogre The Top Blue
Sally Hansen Himalayan Blue
OPI DS Glamour
China Glaze Secret Peri-Wink-le
China Glaze Kinetic Candy - also used as the base colour
Oh My Gosh Cobalt Blue

A random layer of holo or glitter really spices things up - I love the impact here of the Glamour layer.

And there you have it - Ruffles !  See you tomorrow, and don't forget to check out the rest of the lovely ladies.

Enjoy xx :)

Summer Challenge Day 11 - Pink and Blue

Hi Goddesses

It was back to work today and ugh was that difficult.  Not fun after 7 working days off.  Good job I am home now with my nails to distract me, and also a very special piece of nail mail which I will be saving for later in the month :)

Today's nails are very depressing.  Today in England it's like it's autumn - rain, thunder, clouds in every shade of grey you can imagine ... and then look at these photos, taken last week - all that glorious sunshine and natural light.  Grrrrrr.

For pink and blue I decided to revisit my mosaic nails technique which I first posted here, back at the beginning of April.  It's a super easy and versatile technique and it's an instant winner if you're a bit low on inspiration.

I used the following polishes, and as always, used the palest as my base -

OPI Steady As She Rose
Zoya Moxie
Hungry Asian I Hate Pink
CG Secret Peri-wink-le
CG Sexy In The City
Milani 3D Cyberspace

Unlike most of the other mosaics I've done, I didn't use a black or white striper and went with a navy one - a good choice I think.

I especially love how Secret Peri-wink-le stands out in the sunshine - what a perfect summer colour!

Make sure you check out the other lovely Purple Crumpet Fairies and enjoy xx :)

Blue Mosaic

Hi Goddesses

Happy Easter to everyone, or Happy Chocolate Day :)

Here's the 3rd in my series of mosaics, and this one is all about BLUE.    The technique is exactly as described in the previous post (here).

For the blues, I used -

* base of CG Sea Spray
* a-England Tristam
* Butter London Victoriana for the shimmer
* OPI Ogre The Top Blue
* LA Girl Glitter Addict in Incognito
* CG Secret Peri-wink-le

There's a lot of congruence to these blues, and by that I mean they fit really well together.   You'll see when we get to the purple one how important that can be!

Choosing the right colours is a bit like selecting the colours for a water marble - you need to make sure they will play nicely with each other.   It helps that blues all have a similar tone, but it's trickier to choose wisely when you get to colours like green or purple which can be either cool toned or warm toned.   From the mosaics I've done, I would suggest you stick to one tone rather than mix them.

Tomorrow - the pink one, which has a twist :)

Enjoy xx :)

Purple Watercolour Mani

Hi Goddesses

So, watercolour manis are the latest awesomest thing.  They look great and the minute I saw one, I went "ooooooooooh" and resolved to do it.   Roll on 4 weeks, and I still hadn't done one, until Sarah at Samariums Swatches posted this stunner.   Click on her link, because she also links to Sarah Chalkboard's wonderful version as well as Rebecca's essential tutorial.

In brief, Watercolour manis involve using 2 coats of white, a top coat, and then dabbing on dots of colour.  You start with 1 colour and then spread it around the nail using a brush dipped in acetone.  Sounds simple ??   Yeh right, welcome to the Crumpet version :/

When I first did this on Sunday night I was soooooo disappointed, but the more I've worn it, the more I've loved it, so -

The Things I've Learnt

Read Rebecca's Tutorial.  And then read it again so that you don't get it wrong.   It was only afterwards when I was wondering why mine looked different that I re-read it slowly enough to absorb that you don't have to do your subsequent colours over the whole nail.   Doh.

The colour blend is essential.  You need to use colours that will work well together, a bit like when you choose the colours for a watermarble.  For this I used mostly CGs - Traffic Jam, Secret Peri-wink-le, and Urban Night - and OPI Planks A Lot

work out at the start which colour will look best on top as the last colour.

DON'T try to brush the watered down colours all over the nail to hide the white - it makes clean up a BITCH.

vary how much acetone is on your brush to vary the effect

What I LOVE About It

I'm mad for designs that look like chaos, or where there is no discernible right or wrong.  It's why I love splatters, and why I love water marbles.  It's all in the randomness.

the beautiful swirlage of colour - how pretty is this??!!!??

it really doesn't take long to do - certainly less time than a water marble

Things I Didn't Like / That I Would Do Differently Next Time

the white - I hate white nails, and I hate that you can see the white around the edges.  Next time, I'm going to use a super pale pastel as the base colour

that I used equal amounts of all colour and washed them ALL over the nail - let Rebecca's tutorial set you right.  Basically, apply your subsequent colours with good judgement!

know which colour you want the eye to be drawn to.  I was right to do with Urban Night for the base, but I wish Traffic Jam had been the final colour, rather than Planks A Lot

It's fun, it's easy and it's stunning - what are you waiting for ??

Enjoy xx  :)
